Impact is not a static phenomenon. When tended to, it compounds over time. This can be observed in the negative (e.g, employees repeatedly feeling that needs are not met and leaving a company) and positive (e.g., community transformation through healthy leadership and development within an organization).

Traditional program analysis models utilize a logic model approach to identify the connection between each stage: assumptions, inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes. However, because impact emerges over time through informed actions, we believe it is helpful to utilize a more cyclical approach. View this process in the following diagram.

4 Phases of Cultivating Impact

Within each of these stages, we have observed four phases of formation, called the “Impact Flywheel” that emerge within each stage of cultivating impact. Understanding each phase creates a framework for replicating organizational transformation at an ecosystem level.

Phase 1: Awareness

People must come to a new sense of “awareness” before they can take action. Witnessing or experiencing societal breakdown often begins a person’s journey into social impact work to find a solution. When we respond to this awareness, we will continue to cycle through new depths of insight as we mature.

Phase 2: Discover

Ideally, as we move forward in awareness we become more integrated into the ecosystem of people our solution seeks to benefit. In this early stage of building trust with stakeholders, clients, customers, etc., we can begin to test our solutions with trusted collaborators. Once we begin to engage with the ecosystem of the problem we are trying to solve, we begin to develop tools for successful engagement, positioning our role as more essential to the greater ecosystem.

Phase 3: Activate

When we begin acting on the knowledge and understanding gained from discovery, we enter the Activate phase of formation. Remember that individuals and organizations will cycle through every phase multiple times as we continually test and iterate ideas. Each pass through the Activate phase generates more significant insights invaluable to the greater ecosystem.

Phase 4: Accelerate

After cycling through Phase 1-3, we have hopefully identified key learnings in the process that can benefit others. The Accelerate phase is where we strengthen relational connections within an ecosystem, enhancing impact across multiple sectors of relationships. When learning and experience are freely shared, it increases overall intelligence.

It is important to remember that formation is dynamic and iterative, never static. Therefore, while we may have identified and freely shared new information, that information will become obsolete over time as the ecosystem evolves. Space exploration is an example of this. Humanity’s early learning was critical for putting people on the face of the moon. While some of those early findings are still used in today’s work, the processes used to get there are continuing to evolve. In the same way, transformational impact is evolutionary. With the support of outside catalysts, we can create an ever-increasing depth of impact over time.
